Ohio Terms

Ohio gets its name from the Iroquois word, “ohi-ho,” which means “great river.” Speaking of rivers, the Cuyahoga River has caught fire at least 13 times, earning the nickname “The River That Caught Fire.” It was once the most polluted river in the country and would catch fire after sparks from passing-by trains would fall into the water. Eventually, after national media covered one of the fires in 1969, Congress was inspired to clean up pollution across the country and established the Environmental Protection Agency. This was only 16 years after Ohio officially became a state under President Dwight Eisenhower, as it never got the presidential stamp of approval back in 1803.
